Move from site to regional, and global People Organization.
I started as a Workforce Development engineer in the manufacturing department in IM Flash, Singapore (a JV between Micron and Intel) 11 years ago and transitioned into Micron F10 site HR, and subsequently the regional HR team in 2014.
I am now a Senior Program Manager in the global People Organization, and I’ve been leading Micron’s career development program since Sep 2020. The opportunity to collaborate with diverse pool of talents from Micron’s global network and exposure to different culture is truly fulfilling!
I am leading Micron’s career development and mentoring programs.
Empowered Careers is a new program created by Micron's People Organization in partnership with the business around the globe. The purpose of the program is to increase team member's effectiveness in their current role and identify relevant career options to enable them to OWN their careers.
At Micron, mentoring promotes culture, increases knowledge sharing, drives performance, and expands the global network of relationships that drive innovation and interconnectivity.
The project core team focuses on developing the company-wide program framework, resources and tools that help different stakeholders engage in team member career development experience.
Making a difference to team member career development experience.
To truly empower team members to own their careers, we defined the 3-pronged approach, namely EXPLORE-PARTNER-GROW. It starts with team members discovering their passion, purpose and defining their career goals; partnering with leaders, peers or mentors to have career conversations; and finally team members taking charge of their own development by leveraging on a variety of development resources and tools, such as taking on stretch assignments, cross-functional projects, a lateral transfer, finding a mentor or be someone else's mentor....
Both Empowered Careers and Mentoring program are closely related to team member’s growth and engagement, and I am so excited to have had the chance to work with the global project team and partners to put forth great resources, tools and inspiring stories to enable team members to truly own their development!
Know yourself, tap on your strengths and be courageous!
I struggled when I was in the manufacturing workforce development team, and soon I realized my interests and strengths do not lie in processes, analytics but rather people. While as much as I struggled, I had conducted many manufacturing overview and software training for new hires. The courage to try helped me build the foundational understanding of operations, the manufacturing environment and the people.
While I was part of the regional HR team, I spent almost 80% of my time developing my expertise in facilitation, performance management and content design, so it definitely took a lot of courage for me to step into the program manager role, and build a new global program from the scratch.
I realized I learnt the most when I struggled, and I really enjoy learning from others. Being a relator has helped me tap on my social thinking strengths to ask for help, seek guidance and to spur my creativity. I am lucky that I can find great role models from my peers, my leaders, and their actions! They have inspired me to march forward with greater confidence and conviction along my career journey.
Lead as an informal leader by respect, trust, and competence.
It’s my aspiration to lead and to make a positive impact on other’s development journey. I am thankful that, despite being an informal leader who does not have any direct report, I am empowered to create a program that would impact all team member’s career development experience.
My engagement with Micron’s Women Leadership Network (one of the ERGs in Micron), community of practice and my current job role have made me truly believe in the saying, ‘You don’t need a title to lead’. Ultimately it takes courage, an authentic character, competence, and perseverance to realize your own dreams and to influence others. People are drawn to you when you truly care for them as a person, and their aspirations.
